A PHYSICAL THERAPIST EVALUATES:

LOWER EXTREMITY FUNCTIONING:This includes motor function for large muscles, such as those used for sitting, walking, and overall balance. Evaluation includes:

Range of Motion: Assessment of limitations in motion of the extremities.
Strength: Assessment of muscle strength required for functional skills such as sitting, walking and running, as well as daily living skills (feeding, dressing, grooming/hygiene).
Balance: This includes the ability to maintain an upright posture against gravity, righting and equilibrium reactions, and protective extension. This may also involve the ability to walk on a line or balance beam, tandem walk, hop, jump, or stand on one foot.
Reflex Integration: The integration of primitive postural reflexes that reflect neurological functioning.
Tone: The assessment of muscle tone as it relates to execution of smooth, coordinated movements.

GROSS MOTOR SKILLS: This involves evaluation of developmental motor skills such as rolling, sitting, walking, running, jumping, and ball skills.
