Strategies to INCREASE INDEPENDENT RECALL
of Classroom Instructions

1)  PREDICT

After looking at a worksheet or materials for a task, ask the child to predict what the teacher's instructions may be for that particular assignment (e.g., fill in the blanks, circle words, reorder words or letters).

2)  READ/LISTEN

Have the child read instructions for a task or listen as instructions are read.

3) HIGHLIGHT/MAKE NOTES

The child should highlight or underline important words (e.g., verb that tells what to do or number that tells how many) if directions are      available in written form (e.g., on a worksheet). If now written instructions are available, the child should write the important words on his paper (e.g., Write 10 sentences.).

4) VISUALIZE

Train the child to take a moment to visualize himself doing the task as directed.

5)  REPEAT

Ask the child to repeat the instructions to the teacher.
